Wyoming GI Bill Tuition and Residency Requirements
Wyoming GI Bill Tuition Rates
Under the latest version of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, tuition reimbursement at public schools is limited to the in-state student rate. Out-of-state students have to make up the difference between resident and non-resident tuition, which can be significant. Understanding Wyoming residency requirements--and exemptions for military personnel--can help you make the most of your Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits.
Exemptions for Servicemembers
In accordance with both federal and state law, active-duty military personnel stationed in Wyoming are eligible for in-state rates at the state's public colleges, which include the University of Wyoming and seven community colleges. Spouses and dependent children of these servicemembers are also eligible for in-state rates. Federal law stipulates that students remain eligible for in-state tuition rates if the servicemember is transferred out of state, provided they remain enrolled in their Wyoming educational program.
Both the University of Wyoming and the state community college system also grant in-state tuition benefits to active Wyoming National Guard members stationed in the state, along with their dependents.
Additionally, individuals who are Wyoming residents but must leave the state for military service retain their residency status for tuition purposes.
Tuition Waiver for Wyoming Combat Veterans
Wyoming state law also provides a tuition and fee waiver for eligible combat veterans and, if the veteran is deceased, eligible surviving spouses or dependents. To claim the waiver, the veteran must have been a Wyoming resident for at least one year prior to joining the military. Exact benefits vary depending on whether you are a Vietnam veteran or veteran of another conflict. The tuition and fee waiver can be used for up to 10 semesters at the University of Wyoming or any Wyoming state community college.
How to Petition for Residency Status in Wyoming
If you're a servicemember on active duty or the spouse or dependent child of one, you must fill out and submit a Petition for Wyoming Resident Tuition Status to apply for in-state tuition rates at the University of Wyoming. The state's community colleges have their own applications--check with your school's registrar to get the correct application form.
Along with the petition, you must provide the requested documents, including a copy of the servicemembers' military orders containing their home state of record. A petition without the necessary documentation may not be reviewed. Once the petition is ready, have it notarized, then submit it to the admissions or registrar office at your school on or before the first day of classes for the term you want to attend.
