Virgin Islands GI Bill Tuition and Residency Requirements
Virgin Islands GI Bill Tuition Rates
Students who want to use the Post-9/11 GI Bill to attend college in the Virgin Islands are in luck--schools in the U.S. territory are eligible for many of the same benefits as those in the United States. And a pending change to policy at the Department of Veterans Affairs could mean the housing allowance for these students will nearly double.
Tuition at Virgin Islands Schools
There is only one public, four-year college on the Virgin Islands, with two campus locations. The University of the Virgin Islands has locations in St. Croix and St. Thomas. Under the most recent set of changes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill, tuition and certain fees at these schools are fully covered for eligible students, provided they qualify for in-state tuition rates.
As of August 1, 2011, non-resident students are responsible for the difference between resident tuition and non-resident rates. Admissions officers at your school make final residency determinations, but generally you must be able to show proof that you have lived on the Virgin Islands for at least 12 months prior to classes starting. However, active-duty military and their family members currently stationed in the U.S. Virgin Islands are exempt from this requirement, according to the University of the Virgin Islands.
Post-9/11 GI Bill Housing Allowance in the Virgin Islands
As of 2011, full-time students in the Virgin Islands using the Post-9/11 GI Bill qualify for the foreign housing allowance rate of $1,347 (assuming 100 percent GI Bill eligibility). However, an anticipated change in August 2012, would make that amount $2,167 to $2,361 per month. The change is designed to more accurately reflect housing rates in the Virgin Islands.
Students who are attending less than full time receive an adjusted housing allowance based on the number of credits they are taking, while students who are enrolled in exclusively online classes receive $674.50 per month, just as in the U.S.
Eligible students can also receive a book stipend of $41.67 per credit, up to the $1,000 per year annual cap.
