Nevada GI Bill Tuition and Residency Requirements
Nevada GI Bill Tuition Rates
Changes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill in 2011 expand benefits to cover a wider range of programs and military personnel, but they are limited in one key area: Tuition benefits for students attending public colleges in Nevada are capped at in-state rates. Fortunately, Nevada offers generous residency and tuition benefits for military personnel. Use this guide to help determine your basic eligibility, requirements and application information.
Tuition Waivers and Residency for Military Personnel
At Nevada public colleges, tuition is defined as a charge for non-residents only. All state residents, as well as eligible military members, are exempt from tuition but most still pay significant registration fees for each credit they take. The Nevada tuition waver for military personnel makes them eligible for the same rates as state residents but does not exempt them from state fees. However, GI Bill benefits can be used to pay these mandatory fees.
To be eligible for the tuition waiver, veterans must have been stationed on active duty in Nevada or at eligible bases in neighboring states on their discharge date and received an honorable discharge. Active-duty servicemembers, along with their spouses and dependents, are also eligible for the tuition waiver while stationed in Nevada.
Nevada waives all tuition and registration fees for active National Guard members. Certain requirements must be met for the waiver, such as a 2.0 minimum GPA and other enrollment details. For the fine print, see the Nevada System of Higher Education requirements.
Applying for Residency in Nevada
Applications procedures may vary from school to school, so check with your institution to find out what forms you need to submit. In general, military personnel should be prepared to submit a copy of military orders or discharge papers if applying for military education benefits.
Nevada Military Benefits for Dependents
Dependents, including spouses, of eligible military personnel may also be eligible for a tuition and fee waiver at Nevada public colleges. Dependents of Nevada National Guard members who were killed in the line of duty or Armed Forces personnel who have been classified as prisoners of war or missing in action can qualify for the waiver. Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average and meet certain enrollment deadlines. Further details are available from the Nevada System of Higher Education or your school's registrar.
Prospective students should contact local school registrars for specific application details; many have a military benefits department that can help you work through the complicated application process.
