New Mexico GI Bill Tuition and Residency Requirements
New Mexico GI Bill Tuition Rates
Legislative changes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill in 2011 expand benefits available for military personnel, but they come with a catch for out-of-state students attending public schools: Under the new rules, GI Bill tuition benefits are limited to in-state student rates.
New Mexico Residency Exemptions for Military Personnel
The New Mexico Department of Veterans Affairs reports that honorably discharged veterans using a federal education benefit such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill are eligible for in-state tuition regardless of how long they have lived in New Mexico.
Active-duty military personnel, along with their spouses and dependents, also can immediately qualify for in-state tuition rates if they are stationed in New Mexico. Active National Guard members and their spouses and dependent children are also eligible for this benefit, but the application process may vary from school to school. Contact your school's registrar for deadlines and application information if you are applying for the Active Duty Military Waiver.
Spouses and children of active-duty personnel who are reassigned outside of New Mexico can still qualify for in-state tuition as long as they continue to live in New Mexico.
Additionally, dependent family members of military personnel who are killed can qualify for in-state tuition provided they establish New Mexico residency within 60 days of the servicemember's death, according to the University of New Mexico.
Additional Military Benefits in New Mexico
Eligible children of military personnel who were killed in action or due to service-related injuries can qualify for a full tuition waiver at any New Mexico public college. An additional $150 per semester is available for books and fees. You must fill out an application and submit a copy of the veteran's discharge and death certificate to the New Mexico Department of Veterans Affairs.
Vietnam veterans who have lived in New Mexico for at least 10 years and earned a Vietnam Campaign or Service Medal can receive a scholarship covering full tuition and book costs at any state college or university.
In New Mexico, the GI Bill is just one of many generous benefits for active service members, honorably discharged veterans and their families. For a look at more New Mexico education benefits, visit their Department of Veterans' Services.
