Maryland GI Bill Tuition and Residency Requirements
Maryland GI Bill Tuition Rates
Under 2011 changes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill, often referred to as GI Bill 2.0, tuition benefits at Maryland public colleges and universities are capped at in-state student rates. Military students classified as out-of-state may need to come up with the difference between in-state and out-of-state rates, so understanding Maryland residency requirements may be the first step toward using your GI Bill benefits.
Maryland Residency Guidelines for Military Servicemembers
Active-duty servicemembers in Maryland as well as their spouses and dependent children are eligible for resident status if Maryland is their military home of record or if they are stationed in Maryland. Servicemembers or eligible family members enrolled in classes as a resident may keep their in-state status so long as they are continuously enrolled even if there is a change in military assignment or the duty status of the military member.
Members of the Maryland National Guard who provide critical services are also eligible for in-state tuition rates at University of Maryland system schools.
Residency exemptions are also available for veterans who attended high school in Maryland, regardless of their current state of residency. An honorably discharged veteran who attended a secondary school in Maryland for three years and earned a diploma or equivalent is eligible for in-state tuition from select schools including University of Maryland schools and St. Mary's College of Maryland. To claim this benefit, you must enroll in classes and present proof of attendance and graduation to your school within one year of your military discharge.
Individual Maryland schools may offer additional exemptions for military personnel and veterans, so check with the registrar's office at your school of choice.
How to Apply for Maryland State Residency
If you don't qualify for in-state tuition under any of the above exemptions, you can opt to establish residency in the state under civilian guidelines. Many schools in Maryland, including the University of Maryland system, require students to have lived in Maryland for 12 months prior to enrollment. As proof of your residency, you may be asked to submit documents showing payment of Maryland state taxes, registration to vote in Maryland or a Maryland driver's license.
Additional Maryland Military Education Benefits
In Maryland, veterans may also be eligible for other education benefits. For example, veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan and their eligible spouses or dependents can apply for tuition scholarships to be used at eligible Maryland schools. To qualify, the veteran or military servicemember must have served at least 60 days on active duty during a period of conflict as defined by the state. You can get further details on this scholarship from the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs.
