In 2009, the Department of Veterans Affairs created the Office of New Media. This office is responsible for maintaining the VA's social media presence on the Internet, including Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, and YouTube videos. Recently, the VA announced a new social media effort--its first official blog. Called VAntage Point, the blog will be helmed by the VA's Director of New Media, Brandon Friedman.

"Instead of waiting for Veterans to find us, we're going to seek them out where they already are," says Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki, "which is, increasingly, online."

The blog is another step in the VA's massive outreach effort to improve how the VA engages with veterans and their families. VAntage Point will consist of guest-written pieces and a column of daily articles composed by VA staff. Lauren Bailey, special assistant to the VA's Chief Technology Officer (Dr. Peter Levin), and Alex Horton, a former infantryman and VA staff writer will write the main column.

Says Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs Tommy Duckworth, "Not only will VAntage Point improve our ability to get the right information to the right Veteran at the right time, but it will allow the department to hear directly from Veterans and their concerns."
