VA Streamlines Disability Claims Process

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently introduced a new effort to improve the disability claims process for veterans. To streamline the process, the VA will introduce a series of new disability benefits questionnaires (79 in all) to provide disability evaluation guidance to veterans' physicians.

"This is a major step in the transformation of VA's business processes that is yielding improvements for Veterans," says Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki, who notes that the VA aims to eliminate the entire disability claims backlog by 2015.

To meet this goal, Shinseki laid out a series of steps the VA needs to complete including processing all claims in less than 125 days with decision quality rates at 98 percent or higher. The new forms include specific information needed to evaluate the claims, leading to a greater level of completeness and more efficient compensation decisions.

The improved disability benefits claims process is part of the VA's overhaul of a technology modernization project. To find out more about the new forms, refer to the Department of Veterans Affairs Press Release: New Medical Forms Will Streamline Veterans Claims Process.
