On July 5, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) issued the first batch of payments under the Family Caregivers of Veterans program. The 96 payments were the first installment in more than $430,000 in funds that will support 176 participating families in July, the VA announced.
A second batch of payments will be sent July 8, according to the VA.
Program's stipend to support veterans and their caregivers
Since May, approximately 1,250 family members providing care for seriously injured veterans have applied for the stipend program. July's recipients were the first in the program to complete required caregiver training, which is necessary for stipend eligibility.
The average stipend is $1,600 per month, the VA reports, and the amount varies depending on the veteran's need for care and geographic location. In addition to the stipend and caregiver training, caregivers are also eligible to receive mental health services and health insurance. The VA also provides a national Caregiver Support Line to support family members providing care to veterans.
