The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently announced a $22.9 million construction contract to Kepa Services, Inc. to develop a new section of the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois. The project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2012.

In a press release announcing the expansion, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki noted, "Expanding this cemetery ensures Illinois Veterans will continue to receive the benefits they earned. With this expansion we are honoring our commitment to maintain this national shrine as a lasting tribute to the men and women who served our nation."

Kepa Services, Inc., a service-disabled Veteran-owned small business, will support 10 years of projected burials by developing 20 acres. Improvements include new roadways, an assembly area, handicap access, a main entrance gate, parking, signage, and more.

Today, the VA operates 131 national cemeteries in 39 states and more than 3.5 million Americans are buried in the VA's national cemeteries.
