According to the Department of Defense, the Navy christened and launched the USNS Washington Chambers, a new dry cargo/ammunition ship. A ceremony was held on September 11 at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego.
Named in honor of Capt. Washington Chambers, a Naval aviation pioneer, the Washington Chambers is the 11th ship in a 14-ship class. As a combat logistics ship, the Washington Chambers will assist the Navy to maintain a global presence by delivering food, fuel, ammunition, and dry cargo to both U.S. and allied ships throughout the world.
11 Navy sailors and 129 civil service mariners will crew the Washington Chambers. At 689 feet in length, the Washington Chambers weighs 42,000 tons and can carry two helicopters.
