President Barack Obama signed a bill Tuesday to expedite airport security screening for servicemembers and their families flying on civilian aircraft.
H.R. 1801, the "Risk-Based Security Screening for Members of the Armed Forces Act," requires the Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Administration to develop and implement such a plan within six months. Currently, TSA officials are reviewing options with the Department of Defense for these new procedures.
Bill focuses on more targeted screening procedures
The new law's goals are to reduce waiting times for military and allow TSA personnel to focus more resources on unknown and high-risk passengers.
The bill has received significant support since it was introduced on Nov. 15 of last year. In response, TSA began a pilot program at the Monterey Regional Airport using the DoD's Common Access Card as a way to quickly get military members through the security process.
