The House Committee on Veterans' Affairs Approves New Legislation
by Milton Swift
September 24, 2010
Last Wednesday, September 15, 2010, the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs approved several new bills to improve services and benefits provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Three bills include:
- The Veterans Benefits and Economic Welfare Improvement Act of 2010 (H.R. 6132). This bill would create a transition program for veterans who are currently not eligible for other employment aid programs. It would also increase pension amounts for Medal of Honor recipients, create an award for businesses that contribute to veterans' employment, and create safeguards for non-service connected pension benefits.
- Promotion of the VetSuccess Internet Website (H.R. 3685). This bill requires the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to include a hyperlink from the VA website to the VetSuccess website, a government site that's devoted to helping servicemembers transition into civilian life.
- The Housing, Employment, and Living Programs for Veterans Act of 2010 (H.R. 5360). This bill improves and updates internship, on-the-job training, vocational rehabilitation, and work study programs provided by the VA. It also supports facilities and programs for homeless women veterans as well as their families.
Next, the U.S. House of Representatives will consider these bills.
