Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has announced a new list of efficiency initiatives to avoid duplication, reduce overhead, and--most importantly--turn a culture of spending into a culture of saving in American defense institutions.
As part of the fiscal 2010 budget, Secretary Gates reduced or closed 20 excess programs that could have cost over $300 billion dollars. The current cuts are aimed at reducing the Department of Defense's overhead costs in order to apply the overall savings to modernize and improve the current military force structure.
Two key savings recommendations include eliminating the Business Transformation Agency, responsible for individual acquisition programs, and closing the Joint Forces Command, which has become an unnecessary layer of management.
Secretary Gates' chief of staff will lead a task force responsible for ensuring results in the next 90 to 120 days.
