Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay Deadline Extended

October 01, 2010

Servicemembers, veterans and their beneficiaries now have more time to apply for their Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay (RSLSP). The previous deadline of October 21st has been extended to Dec. 3, 2010. This change will allow members of the military a bit more time to apply for the benefits they earned by serving involuntarily under Stop Loss status between September 11, 2001 and September 30, 2009.

In a news release from the Department of the Defense announcing the extension, Lernes Hebert, the acting director of the Officer and Enlisted Personnel Management stressed the importance of eligible servicemembers taking advantage of this opportunity—and stressed that they should do so sooner rather than later. “We encourage those eligible to apply as soon as possible, to avoid the last minute rush, which can increase processing time,” noted Herbert.

To get RSLSP, servicemembers need to submit a claim to their service branch. Once processed, the servicemember will receive compensation of $500 for each full or partial month he or she served in a Stop Loss status.
