U.S. soldiers today have so many options for online education that the Army has decided to shut down its pioneering online degree portal, which has been offering soldiers flexible access to education since 2001, the Army News Service (ANS) reports.
The eArmyU program has enrolled 64,087 soldier-students in its decade of existence, and enabled 11,741 of them to earn degrees, reports the Army Times.
"Before 2001, distance learning was insignificant. Today, more than 72 percent of all our enrollments are in distance learning,” Ileen Rogers, director of Army Continuing Education at Human Resources Command, Fort Knox, Ky., said to the ANS.
The program will be shuttered March 31, 2012. However, 1,432 soldiers are still using the program, and Army officials are encouraging them to continue to sign up for classes until then. Other online education resources for soldiers are available at GoArmyEd.com.
