Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta issued a Veterans Day message, "Honoring Our Nation's Veterans," in advance of the holiday. In the message, he recognized all servicemembers for their service and sacrifice on behalf of our nation. He encouraged Americans to do more to honor and support these patriots, particularly during Military Family Month in November.
Panetta: Military personnel deserve nation's gratitude
"Since our nation's founding, American servicemembers have stepped forward to safeguard liberty for future generations," Panetta said. "And during the 10 years since 9/11, another generation has answered this call to fight and sacrifice on foreign soil. They have done all that was asked of them and more. And as a result, on this Veterans Day, we are closer to prevailing in today's fights."
"For serving our nation with such bravery and distinction, our veterans and current servicemembers deserve our country's profound gratitude--not just on Veterans Day, but every day."
