Today, President Barack Obama signed into law two new tax credits designed to help unemployed veterans land jobs. Both provide incentives for companies that hire former servicemembers. The Returning Heroes Tax Credit aims to help veterans who've been unemployed in the short and long term. The Wounded Warrior Tax Credit aims to assist long-term jobless veterans who have service-related disabilities. The credits break down as follows:

Returning Heroes Tax Credit:

  • 40 percent of the first $6,000 of wages (up to $2,400) for hiring veterans unemployed for four or more weeks
  • 40 percent of the first $14,000 of wages (up to $5,600) for hiring veterans unemployed for six or more months

Wounded Warrior Tax Credit:

  • 40 percent of the first $24,000 of wages (up to $9,600) for hiring disabled veterans unemployed for six or more months
