In a press release, the U.S. Department of Defense introduced its Tricare Young Adult Program (TYAP), implementing the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of fiscal 2011. The premium-based program allows qualified, unmarried dependents of military families to benefit from medical coverage to the age of 26. Where dependent eligibility previously expired at age 21 or 23, TYAP now potentially covers an added several hundred thousand beneficiaries. The program will officially begin later this spring, but eligible dependents can purchase coverage retroactively and obtain reimbursements for health care coverage from January 1st.
