The Obama administration announced a range of new initiatives today to help unemployed veterans. The initiatives include online career services tools such as a searchable job bank, a career matching tool and a Veteran Gold Card, which provides access to six months of career assistance.

Last month, more than 850,000 veterans were unemployed. Additionally, more than 1 million servicemembers are expected to exit the military through 2016. The new tools are designed to help these veterans make a smooth transition to civilian employment. They can be accessed through the White House website.

Veterans Job Bank matches vets to military friendly employers

The online Veterans Job Bank allows veterans to search a national resource directory to identify companies looking to hire veterans. They need only enter their military occupation specialty or code to find civilian jobs requiring similar skills. Currently, this directory of veterans' jobs searches 500,000-plus postings.

Various jobs-related Internet organizations, including SimplyHired, LinkedIn and Google, have committed to tagging jobs listed through their online portals for inclusion in the Veterans Job Bank. Other participating companies are Monster, Military.com, BranchOut, Taleo, Indeed and Twitter.

A career tool called My Next Move for Veterans helps vets see how their military skills translate to civilian ones and find positions matching their abilities. For more information, see the White House press release.
