On Monday, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced the opening of the Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, California. Miramar National Cemetery now joins the VA's other 131 national cemeteries in 39 states.

"This is a special day for California's Veterans," noted Eric Shinseki, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in a press release announcing the event. "By building a national shrine in San Diego, we will provide a final resting place and lasting tribute to the men and women who have faithfully served our Nation."

Spread across 313 acres, Miramar national Cemetery will eventually be home to nearly 12,000 casket gravesites, 10,000 columbarium niches, and 4,900 in-ground cremation sites. The cemetery will also have administration and maintenance buildings, a public area, as well as two committal service shelters.
