Yesterday the House Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity voted to advance two bills to streamline Post-9/11 GI Bill payments and improve oversight of veteran education benefits, according to the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs.

The bills were advanced along with five other bills that are expected to be considered by the House Committee on Veterans Affairs soon.

Bill would simplify GI Bill payments to schools

H.R. 2301 is a bill that aims to simplify the process by which the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) makes payments to schools under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The resolution would allow the VA to make payments to schools after the add/drop period has passed rather than immediately at the start of a term. The goal of the bill is to reduce the number of transactions required between schools and the VA.

"VA employees will have more time to process veterans' education claims as well as allow students flexibility to drop and add classes early in the semester," said Rep. Marlin Stutzman, the bill's sponsor.

Also advancing was H.R. 2274, which requires the VA to submit annual reports to Congress on the Post-9/11 GI Bill program. To read more about all the legislation, see the House press release Protections for GI Bill Students and Veteran Home Loans Advance to Full Committee.
