The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, along with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, announced yesterday that it would give $5.4 million to public housing authorities in 18 states to help provide affordable housing for veterans. The funds are the fourth and final round of money set aside under the fiscal year 2010 Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (HUD-VASH).
HUD-VASH, a program designed to end veterans' homelessness, provides housing vouchers to eligible veterans that allow them to rent privately owned housing at a reduced cost. As of today's announcement, HUD will have provided 10,186 vouchers for homeless veterans in 2010.
