A week after Senate approval, the House of Representatives voted Wednesday to extend tax credits to companies that hire jobless veterans, and also expand education benefits for older vets. The measure heads to President Obama, who has said he will sign it.
"No veteran who fought for our country should have to fight for a job when they come home," Obama said in a statement.
The bill, which is one element of Obama's jobs package, gives tax credits to companies that hire certain veterans. Credits range from $2,400 to $9,600, depending on how long the veteran has been unemployed and whether he or she is disabled.
Veterans ages 35 to 60 would see their GI Bill benefits extended for an extra year under the bill. The benefits can be used for programs leading to certificates or associate degrees at community and technical colleges.
The bill also would expand education and jobs training services for veterans, improve employment counseling for active servicemembers and provide an extra year of occupational services for disabled veterans.
