The Department of Veterans Affairs announced a new policy today encouraging its employees to use social media tools as part of an effort to improve communication with veterans, according to the VA.
Policy aims for open, transparent communication
The new policy, VA Directive 6515: Use of Web-Based Collaboration Technologies, sets guidelines for the use of social media by VA employees and encourages department employees to use social media to reach out to veterans and provide information online.
"It's about getting the right information to the right veteran at the right time. This policy sets us on a path toward changing how we talk--and listen--to vets," said VA Director of Online Communications Brandon Friedman.
Since the VA began launching social media sites in 2009, it has created over 100 Facebook pages with 293,000 fans, in addition to Twitter feeds, blogs and a YouTube channel.
