The Department of Defense announced $18 million in funding for six programs designed to lessen the energy demand of future military missions. The funds will be used to develop improved energy technologies for use on the battlefield and quickly transition to the more energy-efficient methods.

"The Department is taking the lead on this because saving energy on the battlefield means saving lives and money," said Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta.

Defense Department-led teams representing the military services and the Department of Energy will receive the funds. The selected teams were chosen based on submissions to a June 2011 call for program proposals.

The two departments are seeking small businesses and entrepreneurs to work with the winning teams. The DoD, along with the Small Business Administration, will host a related information session in March. For more information, see the press release.
