The Department of Defense announced its cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency in an effort to prepare for Hurricane Irene's arrival to the U.S. East Coast. DoD transportation experts and defense coordinating officers are now on hand to support FEMA efforts.

Personnel and transportation pre-positioned for action

Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta said in a press release, "As Americans located up and down the East Coast make preparations for Hurricane Irene's landfall, it is important to note that the men and women of the Defense Department are working closely with FEMA as part of the larger government preparations and response to Hurricane Irene."

Panetta also urged DoD members and their families to prepare for Hurricane Irene and to stay in communication after the storm passes. FEMA provides a checklist on its website with guidance on preparing for an event such as this.
