The Department of Defense announced plans today to award $37.8 million to 83 academic institutions for the purchase of research instruments under the auspices of the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP).
According to Zachary Lemnios, assistant secretary of defense for research and engineering, the DoD "has a vested interest in ensuring that our nation has the talent needed to help us sustain our technology advantage."
DURIP supports critical scientific research
The funding, in the form of 165 awards averaging $230,000 per award, should help support universities' ability to obtain world-class equipment for cutting-edge research.
The DURIP helps support science and technology research by offering grants to pursue research relevant to the DoD or to buy scientific equipment costing more than $50,000, which can be difficult to purchase using grant funds from other agencies.
