The Department of Defense celebrated employees and servicemembers with disabilities at its 31st annual Disability Awards Ceremony on Tuesday.
The event provided an overview of DoD disability policies and initiatives and recognition of efforts by DoD organizations to support employees with disabilities. Nineteen DoD employees and servicemembers received awards for their contributions to national security.
John R. Campbell, deputy assistant secretary of defense for wounded warrior care and transition policy, hosted the ceremony. Kathleen Martinez, blind since birth and head of the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy, was the keynote speaker.
"It is imperative that we as a department continue to recognize the achievements and contributions of these outstanding individuals," Campbell said. "The determination and perspectives they bring serve as immense inspiration while further enhancing the capabilities and diversification of the DoD."
