The Department of Veterans Affairs announced a new program that serves U.S. veterans living overseas. The program provides comprehensive compensation and pension (C&P) examinations that assess service-related disabilities and medical benefits for veterans.
C&P program launched in Japan
A pilot program in June sent VA staff overseas, where they performed 247 examinations on 39 veterans at Camp Lester in Okinawa, Japan. The success of the initial visit resulted in a return visit slated for September 19-30, and the VA announced plans to consider similar programs at other overseas locations.
"This is an example of how VA is supporting Veterans in unprecedented ways to help them get the benefits they have earned," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.
The C&P examination program has also made use of telehealth technology, which allows remote examinations between VA's National Telemental Health Center location and the U.S. Naval Hospital in Okinawa. The ability to offer remote examinations allows the VA to provide even greater service to veterans abroad because they can be examined sooner and without having to travel.
