Selected Reserves Military Education Benefits
Reserve and National Guard personnel have a plethora of education benefit programs at their disposal. However, with so many options and choices for using military education benefits, it can be difficult to know which to choose. From Tuition Assistance to the Reserve GI Bill, there is something for almost everyone.
Tuition Assistance (TA) for Reservists
Tuition Assistance pays you up to $250 per credit hour, with a $4,500 yearly cap, for tuition expenses for courses you take while in the Selected Reserves. Individuals can use Reserve Tuition Assistance to further their professional and personal development while serving their country.
Voluntary Reserve Education Programs
Each branch of the military offers specific education programs for its members that can help them further their educations while serving abroad, at sea, or at home.
The Navy offers the Navy College Program Distance Learning Partnership, a program that allows members of the Navy to take job-related courses leading to a degree while afloat. The Marines offers SMART (the Sailor-Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript) which helps members of the Marines get college credit for their military training and experience in the form of an official transcript.
The Air Force offers the Community College of the Air Force, through which members can earn an associate's degree in various technical fields. The Coast Guard allows members of the Coast Guard Reserves to take part in Team Coast Guard, opening active-duty benefits to them.
Finally, the Army offers a range of programs designed to help members of the Army Reserves further their education while enlisted, including:
- GoArmyEd: This online portal allows soldiers to access eArmyU and civilian college courses, reports, and advice from education counselors.
- eArmyU: This distance learning network gives soldiers access to over 100 degree programs from various colleges and universities. Online courses allow servicemembers to work through a program no matter where deployments take them.
- Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOCAD): Credits earned at one of the schools in this network of over 1,800 schools are designed to transfer easily to other SOCAD schools, helping individuals stay on track for earning a degree.
GI Bill Reserve Benefits
In addition to the branch-specific benefits above, members of the Selected Reserve are also eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve. This benefit allows servicemembers up to 36 months of funding for eligible higher-education programs. One must be currently in the Selected Reserves to use these benefits.
The GI Bill Kicker is an enlistment incentive option that can increase GI Bill benefits and is available when signing up for certain critical MOSs or into designated units. With a kicker and the MGIB-SR, servicemembers get paid more to go to school than they would without the kicker.
Another education benefit is the Reserve Education Assistance Program (REAP). REAP allows members of the Reserves who serve on active duty on or after September 11, 2001 to qualify for increased benefits and a more flexible window to use their benefits. Benefits vary with the amount of active-duty service performed.
With so many programs available, it's important for servicemembers to do their research and find out how to take advantage of the opportunities at their disposal for earning a post-secondary education at little to no out-of-pocket cost.
