USCG Ketchikan is located about five miles from the city of Ketchikan in the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, Alaska. The U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue base is uniquely situated in the southernmost reaches of Alaska in an area known as the "Salmon Capital of the World." It lies within the 17 million acre Tongass National Forest. The base was officially designated as part of the Coast Guard's Seventeenth District in 1989. In 2009 the estimated population of the entire Ketchikan Gateway Borough was 13,005. The Gateway encompasses 1,233 square miles. The City of Ketchikan covers approximately three square miles.
