Occupying more than 3,300 acres between the state capital of Raleigh and the city of New Bern, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North Carolina, is the home of the 4th Fighter Wing, 916th Reserve Air Refueling Wing and a work force of 6,000 people. The base was established five months after the United States entered World War II and is named in honor of Goldsboro native, U.S. Navy Lt. Seymour A. Johnson, who was a test pilot killed in an air crash in Maryland in 1941. The base received the 2001 Commander-in-Chief's Installation Excellence Award, Air Force--the highest award given to a military base.
