Established in 1919, today, Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, North Carolina, population 198,061, is home to the 43rd Airlift Wing, training servicemembers for worldwide deployment. The aircraft of choice are the C-130 Hercules, capable of taking off and landing on short, rough dirt runaways to conduct airlift missions; and the tough A-10 Warthog, which closely supports ground forces and attacks enemy tanks. Pope AFB employs 6,000 people.
