Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, located on the Virginia Peninsula, lies 30 miles north of the Norfolk Naval Base Complex. Originating as the Navy Mine Depot in 1918, over time it evolved into a base that stores, loads and maintains bombs, missiles and other ordinance--with the exception of nuclear--required by the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Occupying 10,764 acres just outside of Yorktown, VA--population 220--the weapons station employs a military and civilian workforce of less than 1,000.
