NSA New Orleans spans both sides of the Mississippi River in New Orleans, Louisiana. The east side of the base is in the Bywater District and the western section in the Algiers neighborhood. The navy first purchased the land on which the Naval Support Base now sits in the year 1849. In 1901, construction began on the Naval Dry Dock, which eventually developed into NSA New Orleans as it is today. Approximately 350 military and civilian personnel live or work on the 1,849 acre base.
