Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS, or NS Portsmouth), one of the oldest still operating Americal Naval bases, is located on Seavey's Island, part of the town of Kittery, Maine, just on the other side of the Maine-New Hampshire border from Portsmouth, New Hampsire. Active since 1800, the base has been a major shipbuilding site and a location for a large POW camp. From the First World War through 1969, the base was famous for producing submarines, including nuclear submarines starting in 1957. Now, the base provides major maintenance and modernization support to existing Naval vessels. Off duty, servicemembers can enjoy the coastal scenery and the amazing wealth of historical sites dating back to the earliest Colonial periods.

A good number of colleges are located in the Kittery/Portsmouth area around NS Portsmouth. Servicemembers stationed here have their choice of smaller institutes such as Great Bay Community College or larger and more established schools like the University of New Hampshire at Portsmouth.
