Meridian Naval Air Station is located only 15 miles northeast of Meridian, Mississippi, a city of 39,695. The station was commissioned in 1961 too serve as a naval training center. The station grew extensively and in 1968 became a full naval air station where aviation and technical training was provided. Today NAS Meridian is one of the Navy's two jet pilot training bases.

Outdoor recreational activities include fishing, boating and swimming in the area's lakes, as well as hunting and camping in the surrounding area.
