Colleges Near NAS Jacksonville
The Naval Air Station Jacksonville, located along the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida, is the country's third largest naval installation. Founded in 1940 to train pilots, most of its graduates went on to serve in WWII. The base was formally established in 1953 to continue training Airmen.
Today, it is home of the 97th Air Mobility Wing and a multi-mission base hosting more than 100 tenant commands, including the Patrol Wing Eleven, the southern component of the Atlantic Fleet P-3C force annd VP-30, the Fleet Replacement Squadron for that aircraft. It also hosts Sea Control Wing Atlantic and its five squadrons of S-3B aircraft, and Helicopter Antisubmarine Wing Atlantic, and five squadrons of SH-60/HH-60 helicopters.
One of the more interesting aspects of NAS Jacksonville is the base's challenge coins. These coins are presented to servicepersons either for meritorious service or a job well done. Each command has its own unique coin design.
