Grissom ARB, an Air Force Reserve Base, is home to the 434th Refueling Wing--the largest in the Air Reserve Command. Starting out in 1942 as Bunker Hill Naval Air Station in 1968, it was renamed in honor of one of its own, Lt. Col. Virgil "Gus" Grissom from Mitchell, IN, one of the original seven astronauts. Today, with its KC-135R Stratotankers, the men and women of the "Hoosier Wing" support various world-wide Air Force operations and contingencies.

Located 12 miles north of Kokomo--population 48,070--the base supports 1,652 permanent service members on 4.2 square miles. Wide-open space rules here with various outdoor activities including:
