Today, more than 130,000 servicemembers and civilians live and work at Fort Benning, one of the largest military bases in the United States. Located south of Columbus, Ga., Fort Benning covers 180,000 acres that stretches into Eastern Alabama. Rich in history--Fort Benning first provided basic training to troops during World War I--the base is now home to the Army's Armor School, Maneuver Center, the mechanized 3rd Infantry Division and the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation.
