F.E. Warren Air Force Base dates back to 1867, when President Lincoln created Fort D.A. Russell to protect Union Pacific transcontinental railroad workers. In 1930, it was renamed Fort Francis E. Warren in honor of Wyoming's first Territorial Governor, later becoming an air force base of the same name. Today, home to the 90th Space Wing, the "Guardians of the High Frontier" provide ICBM strategic deterrent worldwide.
The base supports 4,600 permanent service members and civilians on 5,866 acres just outside of Cheyenne, WY, population 493,792. With a state motto of Forever West, Old West events, such as rodeo, are big here. Also, within a day's drive is breath-taking scenery, such as:
