Fairchild Air Force Base, located 12 miles west of Spokane, WA, originally started out in 1942 as Spokane Army Air Depot with the Air Force acquiring it in 1947. In 1950 it was named in honor of one of its own, Joint Chief of Staff General Muir Fairchild. Home today to the 97th Air Refueling Wing, the largest in the world, it provides air support to Southwest Asia and the world.
The base supports 5,000 permanent service members on 4,300 acres on the high plains. Spokane--population 195,629--and the surrounding area, offers a variety of activities, such as:
