Eielson Air Force Base, located 23 miles south of Fairbanks, AK--population 35,000--plays host to the 354thFighter Wing. From its strategic location, it can provide combat response to hot spots in Europe, Korea and other Far East locations more quickly than most other combat aviation units. Opening in 1944 as Mile-26 Airfield, four years later the base was renamed in honor of the famed Arctic aviation pioneer, Carl Eielson.
The base supports about 4,000 service members and civilian employees on 63,195 acres. On base are:
