Colleges Near Eglin Air Force
Eglin Air Force Base is located 68 miles east of Pensacola, in Valparaiso, FL--population 6,408. In 1931, when the Army Air Corps Tactical School was looking for a bombing and tactical gunnery range, they liked the sparsely populated forested area and wide-open space by the Gulf of Mexico. In 1937, the base acquired its present name in honor of Lt. Col. Frederick Eglin, killed there in an aircraft crash. Today, home of the 46th Test Wing, its mission is testing/evaluating munitions and guidance systems for the Air Armament Center.
The base supports 4,000 permanent service members, civilians and government contractors on 726 square miles, making it the largest free-world AFB. With its coastal location, ocean activities dominate off-duty time, such as:
- shelling
- fishing
- watercraft activities
