Edwards Air Force Base, located 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles on 301,000 acres in the Mohave Desert, originally started out and remains today, the premier testing site for commercial and military aircraft. It was from here in 1947 that Chuck Yeager first broke the speed of sound. In 1950, the base was renamed in honor of Capt. Glenn Edwards who died on a test flight. Boasting the longest and safest runways in the world, today it is home to the 412th Test Wing.
Just outside of Rosamond, CA--population 18,500, the base supports 10,000 permanent servicemembers and government employees. With mountains to the southwest and never-ending desert in the northeast, the outdoors drives many leisure-time activities including:
