Dyess Air Force Base, located 200 miles west of Dallas, originally started out as Abilene Army Airfield with the mission of training World War II fighter pilots. In 1953, it was dedicated as Abilene Air Force Base and changed three years later to Dyess Air Force Base, in honor of Lt. Col. William E. Dyess. Today, home to the 7th Bomb Wing and 317th Airlift Group, their missions are providing bombing training/combat support and airlift support, respectively.
The base supports 13,000 permanent servicemembers on 6,117 acres just outside of Abilene, TX--population 114,797. Frontier history is big here. Three must-see attractions include:
