Dover Air Force Base began its existence as a local municipal airport, but was converted to use as an Army airfield during World War II. The base boasts not only airlift units equipped with the largest and most powerful military aircraft in the country's arsenal (including, in the past, the massive C-5 Galaxy), but also the largest military mortuary facility in the nation. Its Air Mobility Command museum is one of the most impressive collection of cargo and tanker aircraft in one place. The Dover, Delaware, area offers no end of entertainment, especially for servicemembers who enjoy sports; the local NASCAR and horse racing activities are world-famous.
