Columbus Air Force Base, founded in 1941 to serve as a flight school for the pilots of the Army Air Corps, still serves the role of a primary flight school and produces about half of the U.S. Air Force's pilots. The base is located just five miles away from the town of Columbus, Mississippi. The base's military facilities train not only pilots from the U.S. Air Force, but also students from the military organizations of Allied nations. In addition to these famous training facilities, the base is also one of the locations chosen as a landing site for NASA's space shuttles.
