Colleges Near Barksdale Air Force
Located just outside of the city of Shreveport, Louisiana, and its neighboring city Bossier, Louisiana, Barksdale Air Force Base was founded as an airfield for the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1933. At one point, the base housed the largest airfield in the world, and was built with hangars large enough to accommodate airships (although no airships were ever assigned to the base). The base is currently home to the Air Force's 2nd Bomb Wing, which is responsible for both training and mobilizing crews of B-52 "Stratofortress" bombers in operations around the world. Off duty, servicemembers can enjoy the Shreveport cultural scene, which includes an annual Mardi Gras celebration rivalling any in New Orleans.
