Colleges Near Altus Air Force
Altus Air Force Base, located 140 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has a long history. Founded in 1943 to train pilots, it sent most graduates to serve in WWII. The base was formally established in 1953 to continue training Airmen. Today, it is home of the 97th Air Mobility Wing and trains 300-400 students at any one time.
The base supports over 2,000 permanent servicemembers and is located on 6,600 acres within the city limits of Altus, Oklahoma--population 28,764. There are various recreational opportunities in and around Altus, including some of the best upland bird hunting, as well as camping and boating in nearby Lake Altus-Lugert.
